The debate on whether to supplement your diet with a multivitamin continues to rage strong. Are they miracle pills which will help prevent disease and cancer? No.
Then, are they a complete waste of time and money? I don’t believe so!
For me, supplementing with a multivitamin has been incredibly helpful to keep me in good health, particularly over a two year stint of my life whether my diet was restricted and did not allow for as balanced an approach to nutrition as I would have preferred. However, there are a few considerations to bear in mind when choosing a multivitamin:
- Gender
- Potency
- Purpose
A multivitamin will never REPLACE a poor diet. However, it can help to SUPPLEMENT or FORTIFY a good one. Whether you’re a professional athlete or just find yourself in the gym day after day, chances are you’re going to have different nutritional requirements compared to the ‘average joe’ sitting on the couch with a beer in one hand and a bag of potato chips in the other.
But there are so many to choose from! Which one do I pick?! Fear not … here are two recommendations that should help you regardless of your health goals.
Alternative: NOW Adam
Alternative: NOW Eve
NOTE: Opti-women contains 2mg of soy isoflavones. In the scheme of things, given that soy is completely omitted from one’s diet this should be a negligible quantity.
