6-Pack Abs With ... The Plank

Training Tip: Sit-ups and crunches can lead to back problems due to the pressure they put on the discs between the vertebrae. This is because the muscles in your mid section are not designed for moving your torso, but rather for stabilising it when the spine is under pressure. Better exercises involve working multiple muscle groups without moving the vertebrae. Enter … the plank. Recently, researchers from Pennsylvania State University conducted a study (soon to be published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research) which used electrodes attached to the muscles of 20 test subjects to demonstrate that the core muscles need to work harder during a plank, than a crunch. With summer coming up, try incorporating the plank in your routine for sculpting that marvellous midsection!
