6 Steps For Better Blood Sugar

It occurred to me, after a healthy dose of Tumblr-surfing, that the majority of people have trouble with understanding how (or indeed, why) to manage blood sugar levels.

Why is Managing Blood Sugar Important?
As we all know the body enjoys balance (homeostasis). For people who frequently disrupt this balance by flirting with altered blood glucose levels we can separate the effects of high blood sugar into ‘short term’ and ‘long term’.

Short term, high blood sugar levels will cause you to feel tired, weak and thirsty. It can also make you susceptible to infection and blurred vision. The long term effects are more severe, often leading to complications of diabetes, eye disease, kidney disease and nerve disease.

6 Simple Steps to Manage Blood Sugar
  • Drink More Water
Recent evidence shows us that drinking more water, especially immediately after meals can aid digestion and flush the system. For an additional booster, try mixing two tablespoons of organic apple cider vinegar into a glass of water before a meal as well.
  • Exercise! Exercise! Exercise!
Exercise, especially resistance training helps your muscles burn stored sugar which will reduce overall blood sugar levels.
  • Learn The Meaning of ‘Eating Healthy’
Reduce you consumption of simple carbohydrates which spike your blood sugar while adding more vegetables, lean protein and wholegrains into your diet.
  • Make Like Cattle & Graze
Eat small meals, frequently throughout the day (every 3 hours is a good starting point) to help better manage blood sugar levels.
  • Lose weight
A lean body is better equipped to manage blood sugar, so aim for shrinking that waistline (if necessary).
  • Eliminate alcohol and sodas
This should be a no-brainer, and rather self explanatory.
